Khartoum is a surprisingly powerful hybrid documentary that manages to extract aspiring human stories from the civil war and military regimes tormenting the Sudanese people for decades. While four Sudanese directors interview five inhabitants of Khartoum from different backgrounds, the military coup in the country obliges them to leave the country and continue enacting their stories in studio, before a green screen, transforming the documentary into a more creative work. Two children trying to survive in the streets, a single mother who sells tea, an activist and a civil servant show us different aspects of life in Khartoum through their experiences and dreams. Shot in Khartoum, Cairo and Nairobi with borrowed telephones and enriched with animations, this film possesses a unique quality.
